Project recovery
"In 23 years in this industry I have not seen rates of improvement like this."
A major 24/7 construction project was significantly behind schedule following the collapse of the main underground station. The rate of production, at about six metres per week, was a fraction of the plan and in decline. Failure to meet the scheduled completion date would have resulted in crippling penalties for the contractor and lost revenue for their client. Working closely with the client’s tunnelling workforce we coordinated the recovery of the construction programme. By eliminating avoidable delays and focusing the client’s attention on increasing the rate of production, rather than reporting it, we were able accelerate the tunnel’s construction. Within six weeks, and without extra resource, we increased the weekly rate of tunnelling by 383%. This enabled the tunnel to be completed five weeks earlier than planned and saved £510k.
